ZEBRAFISH!
In the Weicksel Lab, we do our research on zebrafish (Danio rerio).
The Zebrafish genome is completely mapped and has a 70% similarity to the human genome which makes it a perfect candidate for research!
Zebrafish have a unique regenerative ability. They can regenerate their fins and some heart muscles. Scientists are researching this ability with the purpose of possibly replicating it in humans.
Zebrafish are very light sensitive in terms of their mating schedule. This is an ideal aspect because scientists can guarantee to collect embryos 4 hours post fertilization for studies.
